 Foundations of Faith

Foundations of Faith is an intergenerational approach to faith formation. It allows an opportunity for our parishes to work with families, and to provide the tools and knowledge necessary for parents to serve as the primary educators, in faith, for their children.

In this process, learning and formation engages both children and adults.  For families, this means that children are not the only ones learning.  However, this process is not limited only to families with children. All parishioners are invited to participate.

Foundations of Faith is our primary model of formation. It is expected that all families with children in preschool (age 4) to fifth grade will participate.  Another option does exist. Families with children in kindergarten through fifth grade may choose a home based option.  No family will be turned away due to financial hardship.

If you have questions regarding the 2020-21 Foundations of Faith year, please view the information listed below; reach out to Joan Duncan by email at; or contact the St. Barbara Parish Office at 724-744-7474.

 2020-21 Theme: Sacraments

To Our Parish Families:

Foundations of Faith is the primary model of formation for both the Catholic Community of Jeannette and St. Barbara Parish.  It is expected that all families with children in preschool (age 4) to fifth grade will participate. Youth in sixth through twelfth will follow the Youth Ministry model that is recommended by the Diocese of Greensburg. While they will not be meeting on our formation nights, they will covering the same topics in their monthly meetings. You can view the 2020-21 Youth Ministry information here

In recent years, Foundations of Faith met once a month on Wednesday evenings. The night begins with a family meal, from 5:30-6:30 PM in the St. Barbara Social Hall. The topic of the month is introduced, and breakout sessions occur. Pre-kindergarten through fifth grade, and all adults learn about the same topic, each at their own level of understanding. We typically wrap up the evening by 8:00 PM and dismiss with a Home Packet that includes activities to do throughout the month to continue the learning.  In a typical year, we would have two dates per month from which you could choose. However, with all the restrictions, caused by COVID-19, Foundations of Faith will look a bit different this year.

All families will need to register by September 15, 2020.

You work with your child(ren) at home.

Beginning in October, an email with a link to a YouTube video will be sent for the families to watch. This video will be presented by Will Smith, and myself. Will is a parishioner who leads the adult portion of our sessions. In this video, the topic will be introduced, and the adult piece will be presented. We will also provide some tips on how to present the topic to your children.
A textbook, syllabus, and instructions for completing an online quiz will be distributed.
A packet of activities will be emailed or mailed to each family prior to our scheduled date with information on the topic and instructions on how to complete the work.
A separate form was included in the mailing you received for the Home Based option.

You will have the month to work on the activities with your children. I will provide a Progress Sheet of the activities, to be returned to me at completion of each month's work.
A book fee of $30 per book will be assessed.
A materials fee of $40 per family will be assessed for Foundations of Faith.

Registration forms were included in the letter you received. Please return via mail to the Parish Office at 111 Raymaley Road, Harrison City, 15636, or complete your Registration online by September 15, 2020. As always, please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.  I look forward to growing in faith with your families this year.
